First World War – Causes (Teaching)

Get students to read and answer questions on the two BBC interactive articles about the Triple Alliance and Triple Entente.

Triple Entente - http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/worldwarone/hq/causes2_01.shtml

Triple Alliance - http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/worldwarone/hq/causes1_01.shtml

This asks students multiple choice questions (students can choose more than one answer) which could be used as a starting point for developing a written piece of work about the causes of the war and whether or not it was avoidable.

Give students a basic outline map of Europe and get them to shade in the countries of the Triple Entente in one colour and the countries of the Triple Alliance in another.

Not exactly related to the causes but useful anyway - Give the students a basic World Map worksheet with a magnified Europe section and get them to shade in all the countries on Germany's side and the years they joined or left the war and the same for the Allies side in a different colour.

As previously mentioned get students to categorise the main causes under the headings long term, short term, or trigger cause.
